Retired Teachers Serve as Substitutes

We in DC should be so lucky...

This story in the Post talks about retired teachers who supplement their income by subbing for classroom teachers when they are sick or away from the classroom. The scenario sounds like a great solution! At my school, subs are non-existent, so kids usually get split up and sent to different classes if their teacher is away.

I totally know where you're coming from, although I was hoping things had changed since I left the DC system a number of years ago! We had the same situation or teachers had their planning periods taken to cover. It didn't seem to help teachers or students.
Now, as a sub in Prince Georges County, I see how it SHOULD be done and actually enjoy keeping the regular teacher's plans in line for them.

Thank you for your service as a sub, even if it benefits a different school district. Subs are underpaid and hard to find, which is probably why we don't have any in the District.
